Chocolate Malt Ice Cream

Hi everyone, it's day two of "Ice Cream Week" at Red Couch Recipes.  I think you are going to love this Chocolate Malt Ice Cream even if you are not a chocolate ice cream lover!  My love affair with malt powder began years ago when I was a waitress, sundae maker, and ice cream scooper during high school and college summer breaks for an ice cream parlor-type restaurant named Bridgeman's.  The Bridgeman chain used a malt base for the malts and shakes they served; they didn't use ice cream.  They served malts and shakes in a glass with the remainder in the metal shake container that was used to make the malt or shake.  I learned to love malts while working there.  This ice cream tastes like an old-fashioned chocolate malt!

Bridgeman's restaurants were famous for their Turtle sundaes and their Lalapalooza Sundaes -- a massive amount of ice cream and toppings.  My cousin Mary Kay ate a Lalapalooza and then just to show her strength she topped it off with a hot fudge sundae!!  I believe there are still some Bridgeman's restaurants operating  in Minnesota.

Chocolate Malt Ice Cream with Whopper Chocolate Sauce and Malt Powder

Recipe and Instructions for Chocolate Malt Ice Cream
Yield: 10 servings (serving size: 3/4 cup)

1 1/3 cups sugar
1 cup unsweetened cocoa -- I used Hershey's
1 cup boiling water
1 cup malt powder -- I used Carnation's Malt Powder.
6 cups milk -- I used 1 percent milk

Combine first three ingredients in a bowl; stir well with a whisk. It is important to stir thoroughly so that the chocolate really gets mixed in well.  While mixture is still warm, add malt powder, stirring until dissolved. Stir in milk. Cover and chill. Pour mixture into the freezer can of an ice-cream freezer; freeze according to manufacturer's instructions.  This makes a relatively large batch of ice cream.  Depending on your ice cream maker, you may have to make two batches.  A 2 quart or larger machine would be great for this recipe.

Notes:  I really liked this ice cream with 1 percent milk, but you can use 2 percent or whole milk if you would like.  You can find Carnation's Malt Powder in your grocery section that sells hot chocolate.  I found this recipe HERE which was from a Cooking Light Recipe.

I will be doing a CSN review for the Cusisinart 2 Quart ice cream maker later this week,...yahoo!! My teenage son always complains when I don't make enough. He always says, "I only get a teaspoon of ice cream!"

I will be posting this recipe with the following:

Joni~ This is a fabulous recipe. I have a Cusinart 1 1/2 quart ice cream maker and I love it. The ice cream comes out a little soft and I put it in the freezer.

I can't wait to try malted chocolate. I love malt too!
Yummy!

I really needed to win your giveaway. Then I'd have an ice cream maker. I just might need to purchase one now.
